1                    ABOUT         THE    COLLECTION

Inspired by the water, the earth, and the air, Nick’s series of plates is a careful upending of traditional forms. They are inspired by the concept of ‘surface-to-air’.

Like rising bubbles, these natural trails of hand-punched holes bring to life the otherwise ordinary plate rim with lightness.   An homage to the legendary style of Bernadaud, these shapes interpret classical embellishments with holes instead of painted figures.

3                    INTERVIEW        WITH                   CHEF NICHOLAS UGLIAROLO

Q             What drew you to this idea?

A             I work right by the Union Square farmer’s market and I find myself walking through there asking “what’s the easiest path to expressing the most natural quality of this ingredient?” This platewear is an extension of that idea - what’s a simple but effective way to bring a new, dramatic, spin on the classic style I know and love while not being too over-wrought to draw attention away from the food I’m working with?

Q             What’s your favorite piece?

A             That will have to be the spiral holes plate (01.C.017.03). While I love all these, this one is the most ‘surface-to-air’ to me, as the spiral originates at the plating surface and carries the eye out of the plate rim.

04                    ARTIST     NOTES

This was the most labor-intensive and techinchal piece of functional work I’ve ever made, but also one of the most rewarding.

Working with Nick we knew that we wanted to combine lightness and visual differentiation without having the user think this was over-wrought or over-embellished. I think we really nailed this here.

In techichal execution, this was a unique experience because crafting just one plate take 5 hours for hand work alone - from drawing out concepts, to pre-punching holes, to finishing, spraying, and sanding.  They are true labors of love!
