1                    ABOUT         THE    COLLECTION

Inspired by the space above, the earth we use to make these pieces, and Sam’s childhood in Colorado, these pieces combine the ancient technique of Terra Sigiliata (the ultra-fine colored slip that translates to ‘sealed earth’) with simple engravings to bring playful but well-defined decorative elements.

There’s both logic and randomness embraced here. Resonances, waves, and interlinking circles all evoke the similarities of our solar system’s makeup and the shapes we see in our every day.

3                    INTERVIEW        WITH                   CHEF SAM CROCKER

Q             What inspired this line?

A              I had just finished some personal artwork, which was based on a brief of ‘ancient modern.’  So much of my young life was spent in Colorado, and we frequently went on camp trips to Anasazi Indian land.  I don’t think I understood how impactful that connection was until this prompt had come up.

When my very talented teacher Cammi Climaco introduced me to Terra Sigillata and I brought it together with the kiva jars of the Anasazi tradition, I knew I had something that was special.

In these circular shapes I am making an interpretation on the typically hand-drawn triangles or squares used by the Indian tradition.

Q             Which is your favorite piece?

A             The blood red and black coloring of the ‘dark matter’ (01.P.013.01).  It’s so moody, so dark, yet so exploratory.

04                    ARTIST     NOTES

This series was one of the most interesting engagements i’ve had all year.  It was the first time I have combined this matte, rawe, finish of Terra Sigillata with glazed surfaces and i am really happy with the result.  I also really enjoyed bringin in the divider tool for this to make perfect circles that have random sizes and arrangements.
